How SaneBox works: a filter that learns from you

SaneBox is the older idea, and it remains a good one. After you connect your mailbox, it studies your behavior, noting whose mail you open, whose you answer, and whose you leave untouched, then moves mail from ignored senders into a folder called SaneLater. A Daily Digest lists what was moved so nothing disappears for good, and when SaneBox guesses wrong, dragging the message back teaches it to do better.

Around that core filter sits a menu of optional tools: SaneBlackHole banishes a sender permanently, SaneNews gathers newsletters, SaneSnooze hides a message until later, and SaneReminders alerts you when someone has not replied by your deadline. Each tool you enable counts toward your plan's feature limit, which is how the cheaper plans stay inexpensive.

Its biggest strength is reach: SaneBox does not replace your email app, and because it sorts into ordinary folders inside your mailbox, the result appears on your phone, your laptop, and any client you already use. More recently it added generative features: Reply Draft writes drafts in your tone into your Drafts folder without ever sending them, and SaneSummary condenses long emails and threads. As of October 2026, its pricing page data ties both to the top Dinner plan.

How Fyxer works: AI labels, drafts, and notes

Fyxer starts from the opposite end. Rather than watching your habits, its AI reads each incoming email and decides what it needs from you, placing every message in one of five fixed categories: To respond (or To do), FYI, Awaiting reply, Notification, and Marketing. Those main categories cannot be renamed or extended.

Labeling is only half the job. When an email needs an answer, Fyxer writes a draft and places it in your drafts folder and inside the thread, and it never sends one automatically. To learn your voice, its help center says it studies roughly 300 recent emails, then keeps adjusting as you edit its drafts. You also decide how aggressively it cleans: in Outlook, the Focused setting keeps only To respond and FYI in the inbox and files everything else.

Beyond email, Fyxer adds a meeting notetaker for Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, along with daily briefings, meeting agendas, and shared client Spaces. It connects to Gmail and Outlook, with no other providers listed, and its homepage cites more than 25,000 company customers.

Which is better for email triage?

The direct answer is that the two tools are good at different halves of triage.

Sorting: SaneBox is the steadier filter

Sorting means deciding what deserves your attention right now, and SaneBox is excellent at it for a simple reason: your past behavior is a strong signal, since a sender you have ignored for two years is unlikely to matter today. Its weak spot is the unfamiliar sender, because a first email from a stranger carries no history, so expect some early dragging to train it.

Clearing: Fyxer finishes more of the work

Because Fyxer reads the content itself, it can distinguish a genuine question from a polite update even when both arrive from the same person. Its categories describe the action you need to take, such as respond, read, or wait, and it then hands you a draft. For someone who owes fifty real replies a day, that draft is where most of the saved time comes from.

The verdict

If your problem is volume, meaning too many newsletters, alerts, and cold pitches, SaneBox is the cleaner and cheaper fix. If your problem is response load, meaning too many real people waiting on you, Fyxer does more of the work. When both are true and you use Gmail or Outlook, Fyxer covers more ground; on any other provider, SaneBox is the only one of the two that works at all.

Pricing compared (as of October 2026)

The two tools price in very different ways: SaneBox sells plans by the number of inboxes and features, while Fyxer sells seats and also meters usage with credits.

SaneBox plans

  • Snack: $9.49 a month or $65 a year, covering one email account and two features of your choice.
  • Lunch: $15.99 a month or $109 a year, covering two email accounts with six features each.
  • Dinner: $42.99 a month or $319 a year, covering four email accounts, every feature, and the AI tools Reply Draft and SaneSummary.

Two-year terms reduce the price further, and schools, non-profits, and government organizations get 25% off any plan. The trial lasts 7 days with no card required, although one line of the site's metadata still advertises two weeks.

Fyxer plans

  • Free: $0 with 400 credits a month, covering chat, audio meeting notes, and a daily dashboard briefing, but not inbox sorting or reply drafts.
  • Pro: $49 per person per month, or $37 billed yearly, adding sorting, tone-matched drafts, and video recording for a single inbox, with 3,000 credits per member after a three-month launch offer of unlimited credits.
  • Team: $99 per person per month, or $64 billed yearly, adding shared Spaces, team reporting, and 6,000 pooled credits per member.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing with SSO, SCIM, audit logs, data residency, and HIPAA support.

Credits matter for triage, because Fyxer charges one credit for every five emails it sorts and one per minute of recorded meeting, and its pricing page says sorting pauses first when credits run low. The page also contradicts itself on Pro, showing a 14-day trial on the plan card while its FAQ says Pro has no free trial.

In annual terms, SaneBox Dinner costs $319 a year for four inboxes, while Fyxer Pro costs $444 a year for one person and one inbox. SaneBox is the cheaper filter; Fyxer costs more because it also does the writing.

Privacy and data access

Every triage tool needs mailbox access, so the useful question is how much of each message it must read.

SaneBox reads the least. Its security page says it analyzes only headers to decide what matters, and that message bodies fetched by optional features, such as summaries or drafts, are never stored. Credentials are encrypted with keys held in hardware security modules, and the service passes the annual security assessment Google requires for restricted Gmail access.

Fyxer reads more, by design, since it cannot label an email by intent or draft a reply without reading it, and its notetaker records your calls. In exchange, Fyxer says it holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification, follows GDPR and HIPAA requirements, and processes your emails and meetings only to run the product. It also states that your data is never used to train third-party AI models, a narrower promise than never training any model.

If keeping AI away from message bodies matters most, SaneBox's core filter is the safer fit; if you want drafts and notes, Fyxer offers the stronger certification record.

Setup: how long until it works?

SaneBox promises a clean inbox in under five minutes with nothing to install, but tuning the filter takes longer because it learns from your corrections; one user quoted in an independent review said it took about a month.

Fyxer signs you in with Google or Microsoft and connects within seconds. Sorting begins on new mail immediately, although emails that arrived before setup do not receive automatic drafts, and its help center suggests replying to at least five drafts so it learns your style faster.

Who should pick which

Choose SaneBox if:

  • You use iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail, Exchange, or a company IMAP server, none of which Fyxer lists.
  • Your real problem is incoming noise rather than replies you owe.
  • You want the smallest possible data footprint from a tool that never stores message bodies.
  • You want several inboxes on one inexpensive plan without changing your email app.

Choose Fyxer if:

  • Your work runs on Gmail or Outlook, and you owe many genuine replies each day.
  • You want meeting notes from the same tool that drafts your email.
  • Your team values shared client Spaces or needs SOC 2 and ISO 27001 documentation.

Is Sane (sane.fyi) the same as SaneBox?

No. People sometimes search for a "sane.fyi alternative" when they mean email, but Sane at sane.fyi is a separate product with no stated connection to SaneBox. A 2021 profile describes it as a mobile app for reading short summaries of nonfiction and research, and its site currently displays an essay about AI and human knowledge. It is not an email filter, so for a calmer inbox the tools on this page are the relevant comparison.

Where Usenti fits

SaneBox and Fyxer leave one group without a clean answer: people who want AI drafts and meeting notes outside Gmail and Outlook, or who want triage, drafting, notes, and scheduling in one place. Usenti is designed for that gap.

Usenti connects Gmail, Outlook / Microsoft 365, Zoho Mail, AWS WorkMail, and any IMAP or SMTP inbox, plus Slack. It reads every message on arrival and files it into one of ten categories, including To Respond, Awaiting Reply, and a dedicated Invoices & Receipts lane, then writes those labels back into Gmail and Outlook. Drafts match your tone, adapt to the specific person you are writing to, and reply in the language of the original email.

Beyond the inbox, its notetaker joins Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Slack huddles and records decisions and action items, with transcripts encrypted at rest, while the calendar merges Google, Outlook, and Apple / CalDAV into one view. Donna, the daily brief inside the dashboard, combines today's meetings, unanswered email, and suggested to-dos into a single morning summary.

On data, Usenti encrypts stored credentials and transcripts with AES-256, isolates each account with row-level security, keeps its database in the EU region, and does not train AI models on your email. One honest setup note: Outlook connects through OAuth, but Gmail connects with an app password, which takes slightly longer than a one-click Google sign-in.

Usenti is not the right choice for everyone. If you only want fewer newsletters for under $10 a month, SaneBox is the better purchase, and if Gmail or Outlook drafts and notes are all you need, Fyxer handles that well. Usenti makes sense when you want both halves of triage plus meetings and calendar together, on any inbox.

Frequently asked questions

Is SaneBox or Fyxer better for email triage?

SaneBox is better at filtering: it learns which senders you ignore, judges importance from headers, and moves noise out of the inbox on almost any provider. Fyxer is better at clearing what remains, labeling each Gmail or Outlook email by the action it needs and drafting replies. Choose SaneBox for volume and Fyxer for response load.

How much do SaneBox and Fyxer cost in 2026?

As of October 2026, SaneBox charges $9.49, $15.99, or $42.99 a month for its Snack, Lunch, and Dinner plans (one, two, and four accounts), with cheaper yearly terms. Fyxer offers a Free plan with 400 monthly credits, Pro at $49 per person per month ($37 billed yearly), Team at $99 ($64 yearly), and custom Enterprise pricing.

Does SaneBox use AI?

Yes. Its core filter learns from your behavior, such as which messages you open and answer. It also offers Reply Draft, which writes drafts in your tone without sending them, and SaneSummary, which condenses threads. As of October 2026, SaneBox's pricing page data places both on the Dinner plan.

Does Fyxer work with IMAP, Yahoo, or iCloud inboxes?

Fyxer's site lists only Gmail and Outlook, with signup through Google or Microsoft. SaneBox supports Gmail, Microsoft 365, iCloud, Yahoo Mail, Fastmail, and any IMAP, Exchange, or ActiveSync server. Usenti connects Gmail, Outlook / Microsoft 365, Zoho Mail, AWS WorkMail, and any IMAP or SMTP inbox.

Which is more private, SaneBox or Fyxer?

SaneBox touches less of your mail, since its security page says it analyzes only headers and never stores message bodies. Fyxer must read emails and meetings to label them and write drafts, but it holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification and says your data never trains third-party AI models.

Is Sane (sane.fyi) the same as SaneBox?

No. Sane at sane.fyi is a separate product with no stated connection to SaneBox, and a 2021 profile describes it as a mobile app for reading short nonfiction summaries, not an email tool. For a calmer inbox, compare SaneBox, Fyxer, and AI inboxes such as Usenti.

What is a good alternative to Fyxer for AI email triage?

For cheaper filtering on any provider, SaneBox is the main alternative. For AI triage on more providers, Usenti sorts mail into ten categories, drafts replies adapted to each contact, takes meeting notes, unifies calendars, and briefs your day through Donna, on Gmail, Outlook, Zoho, AWS WorkMail, or any IMAP inbox, for $45 a month after a 14-day trial for a one-time $1.
